Hello ! Bonjour !
As a composer, I am really happy about the diversity of this album,
the instrumentations as usual, but also the tempos, the different
lengths and the feeling that a listener can feel. It was a busy year,
with two albums. It does take me quite a long time for every album
I make. I am not the fastest composer, far from the one who never
correct his partitions. Instead, I am trying to connect with evey chord
and noise. The instruments rarely follow each others, don't often play
the same chords at the same time.
Working only with Viveka Eriksson voice on Forecast Proof,
I saved a lot of energy by not singing. My voice is not easy to
control, many takes are needed and it requires a lot of mixing too. It
was worth every hour in the past because it made the vocals unique in
their intensity, something that can't be compared to vocals (whatever
the singer) recorded in a couple of hours and left mostly untouched in
timing. But now, I have done what I wanted with my voice and it was the
right time to compose for a great singer like Viveka Eriksson. In two
takes, she can nail down an abstract melody and almost nothing will
sound out of place ! This woman is now fully comfortable in my music
after singing on my albums Le savant devait arriver avant songeur (2008) and Audiomachie / Logomachie (2009). Because I went for a straight forward approach with Viveka, everything vocal on Forecast Proof sounds more cool, emotionally urgent and less stretched by the intellect.
Frédéric Szymanski sure provided the guitar texturs I needed to make The Stairs of the Unsteady and Permanent Dust what they became. Audiomachie / Logomachie ends
on a totally different emotion; the linear and soft electroacoustics
approach or almost pure soundscapes approach (Luc Ferrari by example)
is not what comes natural to me, I can do it, but it will remain an
exception in my music.
Perhaps by my own fault of composing music that often does not follow
the rules of the music I listen to (there are good and bad sides to
this compulsion), I find it harder and harder to feel related to the
music of other composers, whatever the time era, so I find inspiration
in cinema where the sound follow other dramatic rules. Forecast Proof
evolves from the narrative poetry I wrote for Viveka Eriksson and then,
after four song, let the soundscapes bring you where the first part
didn't go, even if it feels related. Different perspectives of
intensity are given to the listener.
I hope you enjoy !
